SPAY AND NEUTER SURGERY
Help your pet live a longer, happier, healthier life by getting them spayed or neutered at Lovet.

Spayed and neutered pets have reduced health risks, behave better, and generally live happier lives. When you choose Lovet for your pet’s spay or neuter, you’re choosing high-quality care and a supportive partner through the decision, treatment, and recovery process.
Spaying or neutering your young pet helps them start life out on the right paw. Puppies and kittens are more resilient and less prone to complications than older pets, and a spay/neuter when they’re young makes sure they get the maximum health and behavioral benefits. Most young pets are typically spayed or neutered around 6 months of age but, depending on their size or health conditions, they may benefit from waiting as long as 18 months. Your vet can provide personalized advice on when to spay or neuter your pet depending on species and breed.
While the goal is to spay or neuter your pet while they’re young and in good health, it’s never too late to spay or neuter your adult pet! Spaying or neutering adult pets may be needed in cases of adoption or rehoming situations, or due to medical or behavioral issues. Some hormone-fueled health complications, like infections of the uterus or testicular cancer, can require an urgent or emergency spay or neuter as treatment. In these situations, risk is higher since pets are already sick when the issue is noted. A preventative spay/neuter at a younger, healthier age and status can eliminate the fear and increased cost associated with these more urgent situations and provide you and your pet the luxury of planning. Your Lovet vet can provide personalized advice on your adult pet’s spay or neuter and address any concerns or risk factors.

All Lovet surgery patients receive a thorough exam from nose to tail and pre-surgical bloodwork to assess surgical risk. Depending on your pet’s risk factors, fasted status, and hospital availability, this can often be done on the same day as their spay or neuter. If you’d like your pet’s spay/neuter to be done in one visit, just reach out to your preferred Lovet location once you’ve made the exam appointment!
A pre-operative exam and bloodwork is necessary to identify any health risks to the procedure and make sure that the surgery is safe for your pet. A thorough nose-to-tail exam tells us about the physical condition of your pet, and bloodwork helps us see if your pet’s organs are functioning properly — which ensures it’s safe for your pet to undergo anesthesia. For most surgeries, this requires a separate visit before the procedure is performed; for spays and neuters, we can often complete them in the same visit as the surgery as long as certain criteria are met. Please reach out to your Lovet team for more details.
In general, most pets undergoing surgery should be fasted (no food or water for 8 hours prior to their appointment time) and should not be given certain medications. This is to avoid dangerous interactions or complications with anesthesia. We’ll send you specific instructions on getting your pet ready for their spay or neuter before the surgery.
We partner with Trupanion for direct payments, and we’re happy to provide documentation so that you can seek reimbursement from your insurance plan of choice. Reach out to your Lovet team for more details.

Anesthesia in pets works similarly to humans. It blocks the signals between your pet’s brain and their nerves. Your pet is unconscious when under anesthesia, like being asleep, so they don’t feel pain or discomfort during the procedure. At Lovet, a trained surgical team member is tasked with monitoring vital signs and other parameters during the entirety of the surgery to ensure anesthesia is being well tolerated and there are no complications.
Spaying or neutering benefits your pet’s health and happiness significantly. It dramatically lowers or even eliminates their chances of developing certain cancers and other life-threatening conditions, reduces bothersome and dangerous behaviors like aggression, yowling, roaming, and spraying, and prevents unwanted pets from being born.
Recovery after any surgery generally requires making sure your pet is wearing an e-collar or surgical recovery suit at all times, and that they’re not running, jumping, or performing any other strenuous activity for approximately two weeks. Your vet may also prescribe pain medications or antibiotics to help keep them comfortable. After the spay or neuter is complete, your Lovet team will provide you with individualized instructions on how to make sure your pet has a successful recovery.
The cost of a spay or neuter depends on your pet’s anatomy, your location, and the recommended treatment plan. Your Lovet team can provide estimates for any procedure upon request. We offer many ways to save on spay/neuters, including payment plans through Lovet Pay.
Your pet should not run, jump, or perform any other strenuous activity for several days after the surgery. You should also make sure that your pet does not have access to their incision site, as licking, chewing, or pawing can re-open the wound and cause infection.
After your pet’s spay or neuter, we’ll reach out via phone call or text to check in with you and see how they’re doing. Depending on what we hear, we may recommend an in-person check-up.
All surgeries involve a certain level of discomfort. At Lovet, we take extra care to safely minimize as much of your pet’s pain as possible by administering pain medication before, during, and after their spay or neuter.
