PUPPY WELLNESS SERVICES
Vaccines are the best way to protect your pup from dangerous and deadly germs, viruses, and other pathogens — now and for their adult life. We advise you on the appropriate schedule and types of vaccines for their breed, age, and lifestyle.
Your puppy’s immune system is still growing, just like they are, which means it’s harder for them to fight off ringworm, tapeworm, heartworm, and other creepy crawlies. Certain parasites can even be passed down from mother to puppy, so it’s important to start early! We help find the right medication for young puppies to get rid of any existing parasites and prevent future infections.
Early bloodwork, fecal testing, and other diagnostics create a baseline of your puppy’s health, giving us a head start on detecting any changes to their health.
We get to know you and your puppy during each exam, monitoring their weight, teeth, growth, behavior, and more. You’ll get a Wellness Snapshot — our take-home summary of your pet’s health — to keep track, too!
Spaying or neutering not only helps protect your puppy’s health for the long term, but keeps you from having to look after even more puppies! A spay or neuter is a big deal for you and your little one, so we’re here to make it as easy as possible as you both. From taking extra precautions to keeping you updated every step of the way, our entire spay/neuter process is designed to maximize safety, comfort, and recovery.
From soothing upset tummies to taking care of their grown-up teeth, we’ve helped thousands of puppies grow up healthy and happy by providing the right urgent, surgical, and dental services.
We personalize our recommendations to your puppy’s health, breed, age, and lifestyle according to veterinary standards. In general, you can expect a full exam with vaccines every 3-4 weeks until your puppy is at least 16 weeks old. An average schedule could look like this:

DHPP dose 1 (includes distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, and parainfluenza)
Bordetella

DHPP dose 2
Leptospirosis dose 1
Lifestyle vaccines like lyme or canine influenza

DHPP dose 3
Leptospirosis dose 2
Rabies

Boosters as needed and recommended by vet
2Vaccines are given at the discretion and recommendation of the veterinarian.

Write down any questions you have. We’re here for it all, from concerns about teething to advice on socializing.

Don’t forget any paperwork or medications from the breeder or rescue!

Feel free to pack a toy or blanket to keep your pup comfortable in the exam room.

Bring them in on a leash and harness if they’re old enough, or in a carrier if they’re not.

Preparing for a puppy depends on your home and lifestyle, but the first steps usually includes purchasing supplies (crate, toys, food), puppy-proofing your home (baby gates, hiding cables, removing toxic plants and cleaning supplies), and sourcing vet care. Lovet makes vet care for puppies easy by providing Puppy Packages, a smart way to save on initial vaccines, wellness visits, and more.
The Lovet Puppy Package includes wellness exams, vaccinations, parasite prevention, and nail trims. It’s personalized to your puppy’s age and lifestyle, so the number of each will depend on your vet’s recommendation.
Puppies are often affected by preventable viral and bacterial illnesses, especially parvo. Puppies also commonly experience parasitic infections such as tapeworms or roundworms, respiratory issues like kennel cough, or gastrointestinal issues from ingesting foreign bodies or toxins. The easiest way to prevent your puppy from contracting common illnesses is by completing their core vaccination schedule, staying on top of parasite prevention, and making sure your environment is puppy-proofed.
In general, the first vaccine for puppies is the first dose of DHPP, which includes antibodies for distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, and parainfluenza, and the first dose of bordetella. This is usually administered at around six to eight weeks of age, with the remaining doses and additional vaccines such as leptospirosis being administered on a two to four week schedule afterward. Your vet will provide a personalized vaccine recommendation and vaccine schedule to best suit your puppy’s breed, size, age, and lifestyle.
Puppies can inherit certain parasites from their mother, so deworming can start as early as two weeks of age and continues every two weeks for four rounds of treatment. However, with growing immune systems and curious tendencies, your puppy may need monthly deworming until they reach around six to eight months of age to ensure they don’t get reinfected. If you adopted your puppy from a breeder, shelter, or rescue, they may have already begun or completed deworming, so be sure to ask!
For the most health and behavioral benefits, puppies are generally spayed or neutered at around five to seven months of age. Depending on your puppy’s breed and lifestyle, it may be recommended that they get spayed or neutered closer to 12 months of age. Read our blog to learn more about when to spay or neuter your puppy. >
During your puppy’s wellness exam, our vets will check how your puppy is growing with a weight check. Then, we’ll examine their health externally from nose to tail, including their teeth and gums. We’ll chat with you the whole way to let you know what we’re finding, to address any concerns, and to get to know more about you and your puppy.
A puppy vaccination program works by providing the initial immunization against dangerous viruses through multiple doses of a vaccine. These doses are usually spaced over a few months to ensure the best protection.
